Finnâs on the right track. Heâs close to where he needs to be. Abby, on the other hand, is a different animal.â
I crossed one leg over the other and clasped my hands together on top of my knee. âI donât know what to do about her. Sheâs a nice woman. I wish sheâd stand up for herself more when it comes to Lauren Lennox, but she just wonât do it. She claims that she doesnât like confrontation and wonât tell anyone else about it. I donât mind being there for her to vent, but I canât help her. Not in the way that she needs. I know sheâs supposed to do something else, but I need more details so that I can guide her in that direction.â
Simon was listening, his eyes focused on his expanding collection of antique fish hooks, but his thoughts were miles away.
I waved one hand in front of him. âSimon?â
âI know what we need to do,â he said slowly.
âThatâs great because Iâm fresh out of ideas. Iâve been encouraging, Iâve been helpful with her buying and fixing up her house. We exercise together. Iâve been her friend, Simon. How does being her friend help her reach her path?â
âBecause youâre a witch.â
âShe canât know that.â
âWhich is why weâre going to have to be very careful about what weâre going to do. When I say âwe,â I mean you.â He grinned.
A feeling of dread began to wash over me. âWhat?â
âA memory trip.â
âNo fucking way,â I blurted. Memory trips were used for people who really needed an attitude adjustment, not just a gentle push to guide them in the right direction. Ebenezer Scrooge is the most famous known person to have taken a memory trip, but thatâs only because he got greedy and sold his story to a young author.
Simon grabbed a pencil and jotted down a note for himself. âI need to tell Samuel that he needs to add those little bombs you like to use into the android.â He read his note and scribbled over it. âNever mind. More trouble than itâs worth.â
âIâm not doing that. Itâs too risky. I havenât even done one before.â
âItâs not that hard. Iâll put together the permit and Iâm sure it will get approved. I canât imagine Fate saying no to this. Abby needs the nudge.â
I unclasped my hands and stood up. âI am not doing this, Simon. It will expose us. You need to let an experienced person do this.â
âYou want one of the Ghosts?â
âNot Future. Heâs still sensitive about his adult acne and keeps his face covered. It makes him look creepy.â
âFuture thinks he looks mysterious.â
I rolled my eyes. âOh, please. We all know what heâs hiding under that hood. He needs to just nut up and go to the dermatologist. What about Past or Present? All three of them can go in whichever direction, but they just choose to have a specialty.â
âIt needs to be you. Youâre the Influencer.â
âIâm not a time traveler, Simon! I wouldnât even begin to know which events to show her that will push her in the right direction.
